Allosaurus vs. Saurophaganax
Most of you out there have heard of Allosaurus. "The king of the Jurassic". But there was another large predator living 150 million years ago in the late #Jurassic period right along side Allosaurus that a good chunk of the public has never heard of. Saurophaganax.
After reading articles from Paleontologists Robert Bakker and Phil Currie, both these animals are vicious #killers, there are some major differences in their build and #evolutionary #weapons.

Both of these giant predators had massive claws on both hands and finely serrated and sharp teeth. There are two major differences between the two animals.
One is the obvious size difference and the other how these animals killed their prey.
Saurophaganax seemed to be a massive brute. Its bone structure suggests that it had #massive #muscles around the arms and legs for ripping and tearing flesh.
Allosaurus was a faster animal which most likely relied on stealth and agility to bring down large prey.
Here’s a big difference.
#Allosaurus was able to open its jaw at least 10 degrees wider than #Saurophaganax and even #TRex. While its teeth were not made for breaking bones like T-Rex, they were thin and serrated like #steak #knives. It also had strong muscles around the neck, more so than Saurophaganax.
This suggests that Allosaurus would open its jaws wide and use it top jaws like a serrated hatchet, slicing through its prey’s flesh. This would prove most effective and its prey would most likely bleed to #death rather quickly.
It's thought that both of these animals had teeth that were replaced when lost or broken. And it probably safe to think that these killers encountered bone with their large bites on a regular basis.
So.....Allosaurus vs Saurophaganax....
If you put them head to head, I have to go with the size and strength of Saurophaganax but there is a high probability that Allosaurus made more kills on the average than its larger competitor and a good chance that Saurophaganax stole some of kills from Allosaurus.
And then there is always the question; How many of these animals traveled in family groups? Thank you #Paleontologist Robert Bakker for making that question possible.
